The word Variomatic is actually a brand name of the Dutch company DAF and refers to a stepless fully automatic transmission with belt drive. The English term CVT ( Continously Variable Transmission) A roller variator works mainly with the physical law of centrifugal force. On the crankshaft sits the actual variator, axially displaceable on the extended crankshaft .
The Vario rolls (also called Vario roles or variomatic rollers ) with increasing speed and thus more and more effective centrifugal force to the outside. As you do so, you push the variator farther and farther outward, causing a taper in the area in which the drive belt is running. As a result, the V-belt keeps moving up and? Extended? Thus, the translation (analogous to the bicycle gearshift: front larger = longer translation).
An important point that has a significant impact on the performance of the vehicle, is the choice of suitable weights for the variomatic. In short, the following rule of thumb can be used: Lighter weights only allow the variators to shift up at higher speeds, which usually results in a better suit . Heavier weights allow the variator to drift towards the drive belt even at lower speeds, so the longer gear ratio is shifted earlier.
This often results in a higher top speed or the Vmax remains the same, but at a lower speed. Due to the heavy use of friction, the parts of the Variomatik are sometimes subject to considerable wear. The running surfaces of the Vario and the Pulley (also called fan wheel) extremely hot during operation and inevitably come into contact with time. Unclean interconnections, jerky starts, and booming noises while driving usually indicate worn variator parts or a worn V-belt.
